Divorce is oftentimes highly stressful for everyone involved. Out of all of the factors that are considered when going through a divorce, child custody tends to be one of the areas that has the highest conflict between two parents. Between physical custody, who the child actually lives with, and legal custody, the right and responsibility of decision making with the best interest of the child in mind, there are so many details for both parents to keep track of. Attorney Jennifer (Jen) Moore, Family Law Board-Certified Specialist, has some “best practices” that she always asks her clients to follow. Some of these best practices include keeping a family calendar so parents know where the child is and what the child is doing, always communicating in writing, maintaining and organizing that written communication in one place, tracking expenses, and keeping a detailed journal with times, dates, and events of the child. These tasks create a log of clear and accurate information that can be utilized when deciding upon an initial child custody determination, co-parenting after child custody has been decided, and/or if a modification of child custody is needed down the road.

In a perfect world, both parents would follow all of these suggested best practices, log information perfectly with no human error, and keep all records organized and in one place. In reality, life gets crazy, text messages get missed, emails get deleted, and receipts get thrown away.

So how can parents keep track of everything in an easier way? Like most things in 2019, there’s an app for that. Jen has found that the Family Wizard app is an amazing tool to use with child custody cases. The app is a one-stop-shop for everything that she already encourages her clients to do – and at an affordable price. Family Wizard is very affordable – only about $100/year – and is well worth it! It has a calendar, message board, expense log, journal, and information bank. If both parents agree to use the app, it provides one place for all communication and information in written form and in an organized manner.

When you decrease the room for error with everything that parents must track with child custody, it helps the parents focus less on the details and more on spending time with their child. With something as stressful as divorce, anything that can help make the process easier for the parents is important. When that also goes hand in hand with best practices of attorneys, it is a win-win situation. The technology of Family Wizard does just that, and it is why we recommend this to our clients.
